Defining Disciple

Mark 8:31-38

Discussion questions

  1. What stood out to you most in the Scripture or from Jeff’s sermon?

  2. How would you define what it means to be a disciple of Jesus?

  3. Does anything in Mark 8:34-38 challenge or expand what you think it means to be Jesus’ disciple?

  4. Jeff mentioned that, “a true disciple denies himself, not Jesus’ words.” Where in your life do you see tension between your desires for your life and the life Jesus has called you to live? In other words, in what ways would truly following Jesus require you to deny yourself?

  5. Are there any things about which you feel convicted to repent that you aren’t currently denying yourself and following Christ?

  6. Jeff shared the quotation that “an order is no burden when it is given by one who helps in carrying it out.” In what ways might God be helping you to take up your cross and follow Jesus?

  7. Practically speaking, what does it look like to follow Jesus with reliance on God, as opposed to with self-reliance? (If helpful, consider reading 12 Corinthians 12:9-10.)
