Discussion Questions:
Jesus tells Peter that his understanding of who Jesus truly is was revealed by the Father in heaven. When was a time you experienced a personal revelation about who Jesus is?
If the “rock” or the foundation of the church is built on is the confession that Jesus is the Messiah, where do you see that foundation being lived out well—and where do you see it being challenged?
Joel described the church as the “called-out ones.” In what ways do you feel called out in your everyday life? How do you live as the church outside of our regular Sunday morning gatherings?
Read Matthew 16:21 again. Jesus clearly explains that He will go to Jerusalem, suffer, die, and be raised on the third day. Why do you think Jesus responds so strongly to Peter, even calling him Satan? How was Peter’s response a rebuke, even if it seemed well-intentioned?
In what ways are we sometimes like Peter—pushing back against God’s truth or call on our lives because it feels uncomfortable, costly, or scary? How have you found yourself resisting or “rebuking” Jesus when He speaks truth into your life?
Jesus says in verse 24 that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. What does that look like for you personally right now?
Is there anything you sense you need to let go of in order to truly receive what Jesus offers?Jesus promises life beyond the enemy’s ultimate weapon—death. Where have you experienced true life, freedom, or hope as a result of following Jesus?
